Scrabble Bot
Age: 19
Inspiration: Pick-and-place proof of concept
Purpose: Evaluate design for future 3-axis machine projects including a PCB mill and/or pick-and-place machine.
Significance: Merges extensive mechanical design and assembly work with custom software and circuitry.
This project was originally conceived as a pick-and-place machine for complex PCB assembly. The project was built as my final project for MIT's microntroller project laboratory capstone course. Due to the time constraints of the class, support for small SMT electrical components was dropped in favor of the much feasible scrabble tile.
Scrabble Bot was designed in Solidworks and fabricated primarily from 1/4" aluminum using a waterjet. The system is controlled using an 8051 processor and a PSoC per the constraints of the MIT course. The project remains a test bed for future work on both a PCB mill and a pick-and-place machine.
