Age: 11-14 Inspiration: My uncle Purpose: Climbing steps Significance: This project demonstrated perseverance and increased my interest in robotics.
When I was in third grade, I didn't ask for a new bike or new clothes; I asked for a VEX Robotics Kit. I assembled what seemed like hundreds of different machines for years. When my uncle visited one time he saw the robot I had made and then challenged me. He challenged me to make a robot that could climb stairs. That would be cool I thought, but I couldn't quite grasp how I would be able to do it. I made more than 10 different prototypes of stair climbers all of which failed to even climb a single step. I brainstormed for hours on end and did even more hours of research until I finally found the winning design. The design was simple and derived from a previous failed prototype. With some custom blocks nailed to the treads, I successfully scaled 5 or 6 steps before tipping over. It didn't scale the entire flight of steps as I imagined it would, but it accomplished the task.
