TechHOUNDS Teacher Gifts
Age: 15
Inspiration: None
Purpose: FIRST robotics team teacher gifts
Significance: This project taught me about mass production and microcontroller limitations.
How do you thank six teachers for the time they donated to the team? Six custom made clocks seems like a good start. The clocks feature real time clocks for keeping the time, thermistors for telling the temperature, and photocells for powering off the clocks when the room goes dark. The clocks are powered off of a 5V USB port and have a coin cell battery to maintain the time when the clocks aren't powered.
The most interesting part of the project was discovering the uses and limitations of different types of memory. I quickly discovered that storing large graphics in the limited RAM of a micrcontroller is not only inefficient, but also ineffective.
